Camouflage, an art practiced by both predators and prey, is a blending with the environment and is one of the most common approaches to survival of the species. Sfumato, a word that means to evaporate, like smoke, is a painting technique introduced to the art world by Leonardo da Vinci. As an artistic technique, it refers to the fine shading that produces soft, imperceptible transitions between colours and tones. There are no harsh outlines when the sfumato technique is used and areas blend one into the other, much like the camouflage techniques found in nature.
