Trumpeter Swans - Comox Valley, B.C.

This is a beautiful photograph that layers many of the design elements we have been talking about in the road of trials. The white swans speak of purity and innocence and the orange mid ground encourages us to stop and consider what we are seeing. The pastels are soft and feminine. The water's edge is a horizontal line that provides stability and grounding, a point of perspective and the very fence posts lift us. And then there is the reflection, which is given context and perspective by the horizontal line in the water at the mid far left. The reflection itself is soft, matching the mood of the photograph and rippled, adding a sense of mystery.

Bull Elk - Jasper National Park

Unlike the previous two images, in this case, the reflection is joined, one image flowing into the other to create a composite, a pattern and a conversation. Who's there? Are you, lookin' at me?

Sunset, Elk Island National Park. A mirror image that again, creates a pattern. I waited for two hours for this wonderful light, streaming through translucent wings. The experience of capturing and creating this image is what makes wildlife photography is so wonderful.

Great Egret - Puerto Vallarta Mexico

There is a lot of light in this image, the white against dark with patches of yellow and grain make it dramatic, but it is the reflection that makes it magical. The reflected image and actual egret are joined, first at the egret's legs, but more interestingly, they are also joined by the water, dripping down off the egret's long beak. As a result of the connected , mirror images, we create a pattern, a white Rorschach. Bit it's not a static pattern, the dripping water and spreading ripples reveal motion and action.
