Like a conductor’s baton that presents a musical cadence for the eyes of an orchestra, the repeating lines, shapes and patterns we see in nature offer a visual rhythm for the artist.

I associate the artistic experience of visual rhythm with Chesterman beach, near Tofino. There, the evenly spaced lines of winter waves that roll, one after the other onto the shoreline, present a regular, evenly paced rhythm for both the eyes and the ears. And then, as the waves recede, they reveal smooth, undulating and repeating, lines in the sand that communicate a flowing rhythm. Above the waves, clouds swirl and dance, progressively transforming in size and shape as they waltz across the horizon.

In one location and one moment I have found a visual expression that speaks to me with an orchestration of the rhythmic energies of life in nature.
