Excellence in wildlife photography often comes back to one critical item, the sense of intimacy, connection, or relationship that the viewers have with the subject. It’s our job as wildlife photographers to create that sense of intimacy. How do we do that? First, every image that we create, we need to strive to capture the light in the subject’s eyes. It’s not always possible, but eye light is fundamental to wildlife photographs that move people and create feelings. Being able to see an animal’s eyes provides a sense of spirit and often results in a good or even very good wildlife photograph. An even better photograph is created when the animal is actually looking at the photographer in what I call a portrait moment. An eye to eye connection is what heightened awareness is all about.
